The Fire Late one Wednesday night in May, my girlfriend and I spotted some smoke and could see lava-like fire coming from the Jemez Mountains. We knew right away that it was a forest fire, but did not know how serious it was. We drove to my house to ask my dad what was happening in and around the Atomic City. He didn't know the details of the fire, so we turned on the TV to get some information about it. Every channel was talking about the ?Cerro Grande? fire that had started from a prescribed burn. The rest of that night we never left the couch. The television broadcasted that all Los Alamos residents should be prepared to evacuate the following day. The phone rang and it was my dad's boss from the laboratory; he called to say that work had been canceled for the rest of the week. Shortly after that phone call, the news anchor on the TV announced that there would no work for all Lab employees. We figured that the fire must have been pretty serious. My dad laid lifeless on the couch, showing no emotion. One hour passed, and still he hadn't moved. Not only was the fire consuming up the Jemez Mountains, it was also eating my Dad. He was really quiet and that is not his normal self. My Mom and I sat with him watching the continuous coverage of the fire on all the local channels. The news was keeping us well informed of all changes that were taking place on that hill north of Santa Fe. The local stations helicopters showed us that this fire meant business. Flames shooting hundreds of feet high torched anything and everything in its way. Tornado like winds made it impossible for fire fighters and slurry bombers to try and stop the raging fire. From our house we could see a huge cloud of black smoke that covered a lot of the northern sky. When my Mom and I got home from school that next day, my Dad said that the fire was creeping closer and closer to the town and all the residents had to evacuate. He was afraid that the fire would consume his friends homes as well as his job. A few minutes later, it was confirmed that the fire had reached the outskirts of the town. On the TV shortly after, we watched those houses burn uncontrollably; it looked like a war zone. That night I went to bed pretty late, and I woke up the next morning thinking that it was all a dream. Unfortunately the morning newspaper was there to remind me of the devastation that had happened the night before. The TV as well, showed pictures of a town and forest that looked like the Apocalypse had swept threw it. Burning embers danced across the black floor making it look as if the end was never going to come. Live reporters showed just how windy it was outside, with their hair standing straight up and their jackets flapping louder than they could talk. We could hear bombs in the background, thinking that the labs and all its nuclear secrets were up in flames. The reporters assured us that the labs were intact, but butane bottles that residents had left behind were exploding. They said repeatedly that the laboratory was safe and only the outskirts had been damaged. At school, in all the class rooms, a TV was kept on to inform us of all the changing headlines. The moral of the student body was low, almost not existent. A lot of the students and teachers walked around like zombies, empty and zoned out. They were preoccupied thinking of the fire. One week after this hellish fire had scorched the Jemez Mountains and passed right threw the outskirts of Los Alamos; the media was a reliable resource. Causal Determinsim Essay -- Philosophy

Causal determinism is the concept that preceding causes give rise to everything which exists such that reality could be nothing but what it is. Science depends on this idea as it aims to find generalisations about the conjunction of certain causes and effects and thus hold some power of prediction about their future co-occurrence. However, in human interaction people assume each other to be responsible for their acts and not merely at the whim of causal laws. So the question which troubles philosophers is whether causation dictates entirely the course of human action or whether we as agents possess some free will. I will argue that free will is an inescapable illusion of the mind, something which never did nor ever could exist under causal determinism. Compatiblists propose that free will and determinism coexist while to incompatibilists that would be impossible. If we are to decide for ourselves then firstly we must establish the meanings of causal determinism and freedom of the will. Proponents of causal determinism contend that 1. Every event has a cause 2. Human actions constitute a sort of event 3. Thus every human action has a cause 4. Every action ever executed is nothing more than an inevitable consequence of the preceding conditions in the universe So if causal determinism is true humans lack any capacity to choose or to will as nothing could ever be other than it is. (McFee. 2000, p. 21) Free will is a far more elusive notion. However authors seem to agree on a few aspects of it. In his paper Has the Self â€Å"Free Will†? Campbell suggests that an effective free will is confined to the domain of moral decisions. Smoking cigarettes opens the possibility to the people that ar e around you to breathe second-hand smoke. This increases the risk of cancer in others around you. Also, smoke is bad for the environment and the ozone layer whereby people who drink and drive may cause many road accident and they tend to commit violence in the family more that people who do not.Secondly, the negative point of brand rejuvenation is the decrease in physical communication due to the growth in technology related branding. In the past, people spend more time to talk to their friends, colleges and family but presently, digital form of communication decrease social interaction. Because the development of technology, many company try to rejuvenate their brand by introducing high- tech product to the market. Most people believe that technology such as cell phones and e-mail has made their lives easier. From e-mails, to Facebook, to television, people are becoming dependent on technology; we cannot live without our iPhones.As a real example that happen to myself, sometimes I spend a whole day in bedroom just to tweet, facebook and surfing internet; I do not interact with people around at all within whole day. People are distancing themselves from life off- line. This create distant of people interaction from day to day. Brand building is an important issue in strategic marketing and driving force for shareholder’s value.Good brand image and brand recognition in the market is what all entrepreneurs and managements intend to get. The growth and development of a firm mostly depends on the motivation and ambition of the owner itself. Among the important features of an entrepreneur that effects the firm growth involves general background of the owner involving age and education of the owner along with his growth motivation and manage ment know how organizational practices on the behalf of entrepreneurs. Innovative idea and technological capabilities of entrepreneur also the contribution factors that each entrepreneur should care about.We also agree with the authors that brand rejuvenation is a great tool to make more money. Brand rejuvenation is the effort to bring a brand which could not make money into the one that can generate money for company by using new positioning or communication strategy. Normally, companies decide to rejuvenate their brand in order to respond to internal and external changes. For example when new competitors come into the market, they may have taken over the category and the company is struggling to generate revenues from the current product, thus company need to rejuvenate their brand or new option has to be launched.Another reason is when the existing product or service is in declining stage of product life cycle, it is an appropriate time to rejuvenate the brand in order to recaptu re the market share. The sentence â€Å"They conducted an investigation of the incident,† for example, becomes more concise when one converts the noun investigation into its verb form and alters the rest of the sentence accordingly: â€Å"They investigated the incident.† (This strategy reduces the three-word prepositional phrase by only the preposition itself, but it further simplifies- and shortens- what comes before.) 3. Omit Prepositional Phrases In the sentence â€Å"John Smith is the best runner on the team,† the prepositional phrase â€Å"on the team† may already be apparent from the context, so consider omitting it: â€Å"John Smith is the best runner.† 4. Use Adverbs in Place of Prepositional Phrases Just as conversion of a nominalization into a verb can render a prepositional phrase unnecessary, such a phrase can be eliminated by changing an adjective to an adverb and further revising the sentence accordingly: â€Å"Jane stared at him with a quizzical expression† becomes â€Å"Jane stared at him quizzically† (or even, by omitting the sentence’s other prepositional phrase, â€Å"Jane stared quizzically†). 5.
